Smartwool Review and Giveaway!!

2 Jan

In an effort to promote winter running our friends at Smartwool graciously donated some PhD run socks to giveaway!

Review

I wore a pair of the PhD Run socks at the Resolution Run earlier today and they rocked!  My toes usually go numb when I run in the winter and these socks kept my tootsies nice and toasty.  I had to run thru several snow banks and I was amazed at how dry my feet were.

Specifics:

Smartwool uses Merino Wool which works to  manage moisture, improve breathability, regulate temperature and control odor.

Pros:

– Comfortable

– Warm

– Light

–  Wick Moisture Away from Skin

Cons:

– Expensive (but well worth it)

Overview:

These socks provide warmth and comfort for cold weather conditions.

Ah warm socks!! My feet get sooooo cold winter running! I love not feeling like I’m going to melt when the temperature isn’t 100 like it was all this year but I really don’t enjoy the frozen body parts at all : )

  2. Megan January 2, 2013 at 3:10 am #

In the winter I don’t like the ice and snow when running and that burn that the cold air leaves in your throat. I do love the workout though.

I don’t know anything about “winter running”…I live in Houston, TX; it was 65 degrees and raining yesterday on my very first training run!

  8. ommarathonlawyer January 2, 2013 at 4:34 am #

I love smart wool socks, I use them in the summer, they actually breathe better than cotton. And in the cold they are great! It’s incredible what they can do with wool.

  9. ommarathonlawyer January 2, 2013 at 4:37 am #

P.s. I am a follower of your blog, and I love running outside in the winter because, it’s peaceful, because the scenery is different, and because you don’t overheat – it was 18 degrees on my run today, bundle up and feel great!

  10. Mileage Mama January 2, 2013 at 5:35 am #

I’m already a blog follower AND Twitter follower. So far I like winter runs to get fresh air and not be cooped up I in the house. But the uneven surface of the snow is tough for stability, and it’s making my legs cranky!

  11. Jean Ju January 2, 2013 at 6:45 am #

I have bony toes and fingers. The very cold weather will make my toes and fingers very painful so that I can not run in the cold weather. I need to get special socks for my toes.
Thank very much for sharing your blog and excellent giveaway.

    • Jenny January 2, 2013 at 6:08 pm #

Oh my goodness=( Can I ask what kind of socks you have to get?

  12. runoffwriter January 2, 2013 at 6:59 am #

Yay!! Wes and I have been Smartwool owners for over a decade- we could use a new pair lol!

Winter running…two things I love: being numb helps me go farther ’cause I don’t feel any muscle fatigue for a lot of my run, and because there aren’t a whole lot of other folks out doing what I do, I feel kind of hard core hahaha!!

  13. Jean Ju January 2, 2013 at 7:00 am #

I have bony toes and fingers. They don’t have muscle to protect them so in the very cold weather they get painful very easy. I have to wear 2 pair of socks in bad weather day.
Thank you very much for sharing your wonderful blog and great giveaway.

I’m a follower and I just found you on facebook and I LOVE SmartWool running socks! I have several pairs and they are pretty much the only socks I will wear for running. I’m trying to recruit my husband also, so a men’s pair might be a nice incentive.

Winter is my favorite season to run in for several reasons: I can breathe much easier, I find the freezing cold invigorating and motivating; it is very quiet and peaceful; I get to use my favorite cold weather gear; it staves off mid-winter blues and boredom; it helps keep the weight off from the comfort food and cookies; I enjoy other people’s reactions to my “insanity” for doing so.

    I feel a blog post coming on….

    • Jenny January 2, 2013 at 6:09 pm #

If these socks inspire on more person to run in winter, we have done our job!
Blog away, I will come there and read your post! I agree with all of those statements!!

  20. sushismith January 2, 2013 at 6:53 pm #

Hi, so I followed you all on Facebook!
So what I LOVE about winter running, it’s so fresh. The air is crisp and clean, you feel light and airy. It’s a nice change to the tropics of Guam, where I first began running. The things I don’t like are that it takes a lot more thought about what to wear to run in cold temps. You want to be warm, but not too warm however, if you dress too lightly you’ll be cold and stiff….there is a very fine line.

  21. Ammon January 2, 2013 at 6:56 pm #

I hate running in the cold. Can’t wait till summer.

    • Jenny January 4, 2013 at 2:42 am #

Do u use the treadmill during the winter?!

      • Ammon January 4, 2013 at 7:09 am #

Nope. Today I just got soggy feet. I run with a soccer ball in front of me.

The one thing I hate about running in the winter is the cold air rushing through my ears gives me a headache! Argh! But I still push through :)

    • Jenny January 4, 2013 at 2:44 am #

It normally gets too hot with a full blown hat on, but maybe consider a light weight headband thing that covers your ears:) I ran without mine today, and my ears were hurting after! Been a while since that’s happened!

  26. Alaina Maeve January 2, 2013 at 8:09 pm #

Winter in my hometown, Portland is often damp, and the wet makes the cold feel so much colder than the temperature implies. But it’s days like today, when it’s freezing, yet the air is dry, crisp, and full of sunshine that make winter running such a joy to me! Love the review of the Smartwool socks, as my toes also go numb when I run. Sounds like a very beneficial product!

Winter running definitely gets the blood flowing through the veins!

  28. lelomy January 3, 2013 at 12:27 am #

Love my SmartWool socks, but they are starting to get a little threadbare! I have a hard time getting out the door for a winter run, but once I’m out, I love it. It makes me feel intrepid and energized.

  29. KB January 3, 2013 at 12:42 am #

I hate that the tips of my toes freeze during winter running! Some new warm sockies would be lovely.

  30. sherri winston January 3, 2013 at 12:47 am #

OK, now I feel guilty for not at least walking. Growing up in Michigan, I know all about cold weather and even colder toes. These days, however, I live in Orlando, Florida, where they consider a dip into the 40-degree mark “bitter cold.” Love your blog. Come back and see me again as I chart my journey to boldly rise off the sofa, shake the breadcrumbs off my ass and get moving to find myself a honey!

  31. Liz January 3, 2013 at 1:56 am #

What I love about running during winter: It takes guts and the trails are nearly empty, only me and a few other diehards. What I dislike: Far too few daylight hours. Besides weekends and holidays having a full time 8-430 job means I spend far too much time running in the dark. I miss running at dawn before work, at about 6am. Staring into the rising sun during a run = heaven.

  32. Buxxy January 3, 2013 at 2:16 am #

I started running recently and I live in NYC. It has been pretty cold here! Running outdoors seems to be the only thing that keeps me motivated so every other day I try brave the wind and cold temps to get better at running! Wish me luck! Love the blog. :)

    • Jenny January 4, 2013 at 2:47 am #

We wish you all the luck in the world! Just keep pressing on, I promise it gets easier!! I think I mentioned this before, but I would love for a chance to run in New York!

  33. Danielle K January 3, 2013 at 3:16 am #

I hate how my chest burns when I run in the winter!

  34. willbfit January 3, 2013 at 5:30 am #

I’m a follower! I don’t like the short days, and unshoveled sidewalks that hide ice!! Yikes!

  35. runnergurrl January 3, 2013 at 4:27 pm #

Oh where do I begin…..The worst part of winter running for me would be icy sidewalks!

Ice can be so deadly! But I only ever see people who are walking fall…maybe us runners are far to graceful to fall ;)

  36. progressbyaccident January 3, 2013 at 9:36 pm #

I live running in the worst weather, being tossed around by the wind, watching my fingers develop a frozen sheen, my feet thank me for the frozen puddle of mud I stamp through, the light layer of frost in my shoulders and thighs, the wobbly feeling as I push myself past my limits and then getting home, knowing that I’ve done something that’s at would think insane!! Keep running, blogging and I’m jealous of your snow run!

  37. Bonnie January 3, 2013 at 10:46 pm #

This is my first year running in the winter. I thought I would hate it, but it’s actually not too bad! I like the quiet, and that I don’t get as sweaty and dehydrated as I do in the summer!

    • Jenny January 4, 2013 at 2:55 am #

Isn’t it weird!? I find that true as well. I started running in the fall, and found that summer was the worst time of year for running. I was so hot and miserable! Definitely better for distance running, but in general winter takes the cake for all around enjoyment!

I like that it is a great way to enjoy the beautiful snow and be outside without getting too cold. I don’t like that it is tough to regulate your temperature and when snow makes the run slippery…but maybe a good pair of socks will help that ;)

  48. graceglimmers January 7, 2013 at 5:23 pm #

Smart wool socks are great! I have one pair, but they really do keep your feet warm and dry…great for running, around the house, or in boots!
